Bastrop, Texas

Bastrop, Texas is the county seat of Bastrop County. It is located in central Texas, about 30 miles east of Austin, Texas. Bastrop is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. In the year 2000, Bastrop had a estimated population of 5,340 residents. The city is named after the same Baron de Bastrop as Bastrop County.

The city of Bastrop is nestled on the banks of the Colorado River.  Completed in 1998, the Bastrop River Walk is a scenic walkway along the river. At Christmas, the River of Lights Display is a must-see attraction. Although a fire in 1862 destroyed most of the downtown commercial buildings and the county courthouse, Bastrop's history is a major attraction. The number of buildings in town that are listed in the National Register of Historic Places has earned Bastrop the title of the "Most Historic Small Town in Texas."
